Bookups started with an idea pitch during Techstars Startup Weekend Bucharest (16–18 November 2018), an idea which somehow coagulated a three-strong team who worked for 54 hours straight to turn the idea into business.
As part of the validation process, we created an event on Facebook where we invited people to join us in discussing Harari’s “Sapiens. A Brief History of Humankind”. This is what we now call Bookup Zero — the very first bookup which gave us hope and reason to believe that many readers out there share our need to talk about the books they read while meeting new people with shared values. Three people showed up, even though the event was announced only one day in advance.
To cut the long story short, we won 1st Prize. However, as the judges pointed out wisely, the success of our business can only be truly judged by the market and our future customers.
For our first official bookup — Bookup №1 — we continued our talk on Harari’s “Sapiens. A Brief History of Humankind”. Apart from Radu and myself, we were joined but two other friends. A slow start will certainly not bring us down!
The discussion was lively, and our friends pointed out how useful it was to debate ideas, whether seeking validation for your own or learning new perspectives. The show must definitely go on!
